ERP Therapy in New York and Michigan.
You’ve spent so much time trying to feel certain. What if you didn’t have to?
When your mind feels stuck on the same fears, questions, or possibilities over and over again, it can be exhausting trying to find relief. You may find yourself checking, researching, avoiding certain situations, asking for reassurance, or replaying conversations in your head hoping to finally feel “sure.” Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a specialized therapy approach designed to help you step out of that cycle. Instead of spending more time fighting against uncomfortable thoughts or trying to eliminate uncertainty, ERP helps you practice responding differently when anxiety shows up. Together, we’ll identify the patterns that keep you feeling stuck and create intentional, manageable steps to help you face what feels difficult while learning that anxiety and uncertainty are experiences you can handle. Over time, ERP can help you spend less energy managing fear and more time focusing on the people, experiences, and goals that matter to you.
Is ERP right for you?
ERP may be a good fit if you…
Feel stuck in cycles of intrusive thoughts, worries, or “what if” questions that are difficult to turn off.
Spend a lot of time checking, reviewing, researching, asking for reassurance, or trying to prevent something bad from happening.
Avoid certain situations, places, objects, conversations, or experiences because they trigger anxiety.
Understand that your fears may not fully match reality, but still feel unable to stop responding to them.
Feel like anxiety is making your world smaller or keeping you from living the way you want.
ERP is not about forcing yourself to “just get over it.” It is about learning, through experience, that you can handle discomfort without letting fear make every decision for you.
Your thoughts may feel powerful, but they don’t have to control your life.
Learning a new way to respond
Understanding your patterns is important, but change happens through practice.
Many people with OCD already understand that their thoughts or fears may not make sense logically. They may know that checking one more time will not actually create certainty, or that avoiding something will only provide temporary relief. But knowing this does not always make it easier to stop.
ERP focuses on helping you practice a different response when anxiety shows up. We’ll work together to understand what your mind is trying to protect you from, identify the behaviors that keep the cycle going, and create a plan that feels challenging while still manageable.
Treatment may include gradually approaching situations, thoughts, or feelings that you have been avoiding while practicing letting go of rituals, reassurance-seeking, or other behaviors that keep anxiety in control.
The goal is not to make you feel anxious forever. The goal is to help you discover that anxiety can rise and fall without needing to take over your choices.
ERP is a collaborative process designed around your experience
ERP is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Your treatment is built around understanding how anxiety shows up for you and identifying the specific situations, thoughts, or patterns that are keeping you stuck.
Some parts of ERP may include practicing exposures in everyday situations, creating exercises for fears that are harder to face in real life, and learning how to respond differently when the urge to complete a ritual appears.
Throughout treatment, we’ll talk through what you notice, what feels difficult, and what you learn from each experience. The process is not about proving that nothing bad will ever happen. Instead, it is about building confidence in your ability to handle uncertainty without needing OCD to give you permission to move forward.
Because OCD often shows up most strongly in your daily environment, virtual ERP can be especially helpful. Video sessions allow us to work with you in the spaces where these patterns actually happen, whether that means practicing exposures at home, observing routines, or helping you apply treatment where you need it most.

FAQs
-
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a specialized form of therapy that helps people change the cycle between anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and compulsive behaviors. ERP involves gradually approaching situations that create anxiety while practicing responding differently instead of relying on rituals or avoidance.
-
ERP can feel uncomfortable at times because it involves practicing things that anxiety has taught you to avoid. However, treatment is not about overwhelming you or throwing you into your biggest fear immediately. Exposures are carefully planned and completed gradually so you can build confidence through each step.
-
No. Change happens gradually. Many people find it difficult to immediately stop behaviors that have become automatic or feel protective. ERP focuses on helping you reduce these patterns over time while building confidence in your ability to tolerate discomfort.
-
The length of ERP treatment depends on your specific symptoms, goals, and how much anxiety is impacting your life. Many structured ERP programs include weekly sessions over several months, with practice between sessions to help you continue building progress outside of therapy.
-
Yes. ERP can be done effectively through telehealth. Virtual sessions can be especially helpful because they allow treatment to happen in the environments where anxiety and compulsive behaviors naturally occur.
